Worried about overseas returns? What to ask before buying
You have found a product overseas, but worries about damage, a wrong item or a difficult return are holding you back. Before paying, ask more than whether returns are accepted: establish who to contact, the deadline and the evidence needed. These questions help make the seller’s process clearer before you decide to buy.

Ask about the situation you are actually worried about
“Can I return it?” may not show which situation the seller’s answer covers. Identify the product and international destination, then ask about the circumstances relevant to you:
- The model, colour or quantity differs from the order.
- Damage or an initial defect is found on arrival.
- The size or intended use does not suit you.
- The advised delivery period passes without the parcel arriving.
Ask about opened or used items and any separate conditions for sale or custom-made products. For a manufacturer’s warranty covering later faults, check the faults covered, contact point, acceptance of international returns and who pays repair and shipping costs.
Clarify deadlines and return shipping before payment
Check the return country, reporting deadline, prior approval and who pays shipping before payment. Replace details in brackets before sending this enquiry, and add any other questions that matter to you:
Hello, Before buying [quantity] of [product URL / model], I would like to check the return process for delivery to [country]. If the item arrives damaged or is not the item ordered, how soon must I report it, and what evidence is required? Is return approval needed, and who pays return shipping? Thank you.
It asks when and how to report arrival damage or an incorrect item, whether return approval is needed and who pays transport. Add questions about which costs a refund covers, its timing and shipping for a replacement if these affect your decision.
Keep the seller’s answer with the exact product details
Save the product page, selected model, colour and size, the seller’s answers and the order details together. Check for a return-authorization number or required shipping method before returning anything. Reporting the condition and confirming instructions before arranging a repair or return can reduce crossed messages.
On arrival, check the outer box, packaging, item and quantity. If there is a problem, gather photos and order details and report it promptly. If you want transport insurance, check availability for this shipment, damage and loss coverage, exclusions, reporting deadlines, required evidence and the premium. Use the answers to choose the coverage and cost you need.
Get help checking terms and making the first report
PORTLETTER includes basic checks of seller return and warranty terms in its pre-quote research. For initial defects, shortages or damage on arrival, the service fee includes organizing the first report and evidence, initial contact with the supplier or carrier and sharing their reply.
Contact us within seven days of delivery, or by any earlier reporting deadline set by the seller, carrier or insurer. We explain the applicable deadline before ordering. Report non-arrival promptly after the advised delivery window. Help with later faults or warranty contact requires a separate scope quote and prepayment. Support does not guarantee a return, refund or repair, or provide independent compensation for the product’s price. Start with the product link and the issue you want checked before buying.
