What will an overseas purchase really cost to deliver to Japan?

The product fits your budget on an overseas website, but what will it cost to get it to Japan? Before pressing Buy, separate costs already included in the price from those payable later. This guide covers what to ask the seller and how to use the answers to compare the total.

Check five parts of the cost

Keep the product page open and note the following. Mark missing amounts “unconfirmed” rather than entering zero.

  • Goods: check the unit price, quantity, colour or model, and currency.
  • Shipping: does it cover delivery to your address in Japan, or only domestic delivery in the seller's country?
  • Taxes and clearance: which amounts does the seller collect, and which are payable separately on arrival or later?
  • Insurance and packaging: what is standard, and what would your requested extras cost?
  • Payment: what card or transfer fees and currency conversion rate apply?

Compare prices using the same currency and quantity. A reference JPY display may differ from the actual payment amount. Recording the exchange rate and check time helps you make a consistent comparison.

Ask where “free shipping” ends and whether taxes are included

Check which countries the free-shipping offer covers and whether Japan can be selected as the destination. Then ask about taxes and clearance as well:

Please quote the product price and shipping for [quantity] to [area and postcode in Japan]. Are taxes and clearance fees included? If anything is payable separately, who collects it?

Ask for goods, shipping, included taxes and separately payable charges as individual amounts. Compare the breakdown so a tax collected by the seller is not added again as an arrival charge. If shipping or tax information is missing, ask about that item before setting your budget.

Compare the delivered cost using one hypothetical example

This worked example shows how to move from the product price to a delivery budget. The figures in the table are illustrative assumptions.

Illustrative external purchase costs, converted to JPY
CostAssumed amount
GoodsJPY 80,000
Shipping to JapanJPY 10,000
Taxes, insurance and transfersJPY 10,000
Total external costsJPY 100,000

Here, compare buying locally against a JPY 100,000 total. Check taxes for the product, intended use, material and origin. Confirm the relevant customs value and whether simplified tariffs apply, then include the result in the estimate for this purchase.

Consult Japan Customs' simplified tariff guidance (Japanese) and customs valuation guidance, checked on 25 October 2026. The checks needed depend on the product, use, material, origin and other circumstances.

If costs remain unclear, start with the product link

If you can establish the terms yourself, keep the answers and decide whether to buy. If shipping or tax remains unclear, or you want one contact to handle supplier emails, send PORTLETTER the URL, necessary specifications, quantity and reply email. Initial enquiry, basic checks and estimate are free.

If you ask us to arrange the purchase, our fee is a tax-inclusive 5% of actual external costs, excluding our own fee, with no minimum fee. In the example above, that is JPY 5,000 and a JPY 105,000 total. Review open costs and conditions before proceeding; see our transaction terms for contract and payment conditions.
